One of the greatest collections of Australian touring cars ever assembled will be on display at AirTouch 500 this September, bringing together some of the most iconic machines, rivalries and moments in motorsport history.
Exclusive to Grandstand ticket holders and above, the new Touring Car Icons exhibition features eleven legendary race cars valued at more than $12 million, spanning over five decades of Australian touring car racing.
Launching in the Welcome Centre at Shell V-Power Motorsport Park, the exhibition tells six unforgettable stories through carefully selected vehicle pairings, celebrating the drivers, rivalries and defining moments that shaped the sport.
Among the headline attractions are two of Peter Brock’s most famous race cars, the 1978 Holden Torana A9X and the 1986 Holden VK Commodore Group A, displayed alongside the prestigious Peter Brock Trophy. The exhibition opens in the same week as the 20th anniversary of Brock’s passing, creating a special opportunity for fans to reflect on the legacy of Australia’s most celebrated touring car driver.
Visitors will also see:
- Mark Skaife’s Holden Racing Team Commodore and Russell Ingall’s Caltex Falcon reunited from the infamous 2003 “Shriek at the Creek” clash for the first time in more than 20 years.
- The ANZ Ford Sierra RS500 and GIO Nissan Skyline GT-R, representing the firepower of the Group A era.
- Craig Lowndes’ 1998 championship-winning VT Commodore displayed alongside Brock’s iconic A9X.
- Chaz Mostert’s championship-winning Walkinshaw Mustang shown exactly as it finished its title-winning race, complete with tyre rubber and race scars.
- Mark Larkham’s popular Orrcon AU Falcon, accompanied by one of Larko’s trademark whiteboard explanations.
Curated by The Bend’s Motorsport and Operations Manager, Adam Brook, the exhibition has been months in the making, with cars sourced from private collections across Australia.
“We’ve created the exhibition we would want to see as fans ourselves,” Brook said.
“These cars tell the stories that made many of us fall in love with the sport. Bringing them together in one place has taken a huge effort, but we know fans are going to love the stories behind every pairing.”
Unlike a traditional museum display, Touring Car Icons has been designed to immerse visitors in the history behind the machines, focusing on the moments, rivalries and achievements that helped cement these cars as motorsport legends.
The exhibition officially opens during AirTouch 500 and will be available throughout the event weekend from 11-13 September.
